I had the incredible experience celebrating literacy at #northgate park giving #books to kids who need them most! My nonprofit gave out 500 brand new books and dozens of beautiful ANYWAY magazines to children of all ages during Assembly Member Kevin McCarty and Pro Tem Karina Talamantes's ANNUAL BACKPACK GIVEAWAY! This was such a rewarding day, filled with so much #kidlit love! Lives were changed & reading was inspired! Let’s keep fighting #literacy injustice & changing the world one book at a time! A special thank you to Jennifer Frances, Founder of Bess The Book Bus, for donating books to help me spread literacy love & to everyone who joined my literacy cavalry! I am so grateful! Here’s to literacy and justice for all!
It was so much fun talking part in the Twin Cities Multicultural Celebration of Unity Festival! Having the opportunity to advocate for early literacy and spreading book joy was amazing! I gave kids books, ANYWAY Magazines, #candy & much more, to bright and kind Head Start kids! And, I couldn’t have spread so much kindness to so many kids without the generosity shown to me and my nonprofit by so many! Thank you
Dream come true! I was invited by the Sacramento Kings Community to participate in their 2024 Youth Entrepreneur Night where I was able to give hundreds of new books & magazines to kids from all over Sacramento communities! It was a day to remember! A big thank you to the Sacramento Kings!

I have the incredible honor of partnering with the amazing Bess The Book Bus to help spread book joy! Through generous donations, Bess The Book Bus will be supplying high quality books for me to share with local kids & schools who need them most. I'm so excited & grateful to share my reading advocacy journey with such an extraordinary literacy organization. I'll be sharing books on Giving Tuesday, National Read Across America Day and Children's Book Week. To find out more about all the wonderful contributions Bess the Bus is making to help narrow the academic achievement gap, while also inspiring kids to read, visit Bess The Book Bus website at: www.bessthebookbus.org
Since my book journey began, I've learned so much about the importance of being a literary advocate! Sharing my book journey started with me sharing my love of reading, but now I see now how important it is to try and inspire others to start their own reading journey! Unfortunately, not all kids have the access to stories and not all kids get the same opportunities to attend book events!
There are many ways to become an advocate for literacy. Here are some examples of ways you can begin (or continue) your path to celebrating and promoting books, reading and learning!
WHAT IS A LITERACY ADVOCATE?
A literacy advocate supports or speaks out for someone else’s educational needs or rights in reading, writing, and language. When you advocate, you may focus on one child’s needs, issues for many children, or ways to teach and learn.
There are many organizations that promote literacy. You can find a few listed on this page below.
PJ Library sends free high-quality Jewish children’s books to families every month. These stories spark conversations that inspire the whole family to explore and celebrate what they love about Jewish life.
The program was created by the nonprofit Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) in keeping with its mission to help people connect to Jewish values, traditions, and culture while building vibrant Jewish communities. The HGF partners with local Jewish organizations to fund PJ Library and make it available in their community.
After launching in 1995, the program grew quickly. First books were only distributed to children living in Sevier County, Tennessee where Dolly grew up. It became such a success that in 2000 a national replication effort was underway. By 2003, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had mailed one million books. It would prove to be the first of many millions of books sent to children around the world.

The Coalition for Literacy Equity (CLE) works to ensure that all children have access to books and reading culture. Through programming, advocacy, research, and collaboration, we promote lifelong literacy for enjoyment, engagement, and empowerment.
