HOW TO BECOME A LITERACY ADVOCATE

Since my book journey began, I've learned so much about the importance of being a literary advocate! Sharing my book journey started with me sharing my love of reading, but now I see now how important it is to try and inspire others to start their own reading journey! Unfortunately, not all kids have the access to stories and not all kids get the same opportunities to attend book events!

There are many ways to become an advocate for literacy. Here are some examples of ways you can begin (or continue)  your path to celebrating and promoting books, reading and learning!

    1. Invite Literacy Advocates (like me) to speak to classes.
    2. Sign up for a library card at your public library.
    3. Attend library events.
    4. Be a Book Fair! www.ibelieveinbookfairies.com
    5. Charter or “adopt” a Little Free Library.
    6. Leave reviews of books you love on consumer and social network sites.
    7. Attend bookstore/Author events.
    8. Start your own Little Free Library book sharing box! www.littlefreelibrary.org
    9. Recommend books and media for purchase at your public library.
    10. Donate to a worthy book/literacy cause. See the the list of organizations below!
    11. Talk about books whenever possible!
    12. Volunteer at a local literacy organization.
    13. Donate books to libraries and schools.
    14. Help classrooms build libraries.
    15. Start a literacy podcast (Like My E Train Talks Podcast)!
    16. Host a book drive and donate the books collected.
    17. Create your own book share club.
    18. Lead a book club.
    19. Give books as gifts whenever possible!
    20. Read!

    WHAT IS A LITERACY ADVOCATE?

    WHAT IS A LITERACY ADVOCATE?

A literacy advocate supports or speaks out for someone else’s educational needs or rights in reading, writing, and language. When you advocate, you may focus on one child’s needs, issues for many children, or ways to teach and learn.

There are many organizations that promote literacy. You can find a few listed on this page below.

    Rise Up Foundation

PJ Library sends free high-quality Jewish children’s books to families every month. These stories spark conversations that inspire the whole family to explore and celebrate what they love about Jewish life.

The program was created by the nonprofit Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) in keeping with its mission to help people connect to Jewish values, traditions, and culture while building vibrant Jewish communities. The HGF partners with local Jewish organizations to fund PJ Library and make it available in their community.

    About Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is a book gifting program that mails free, high-quality books to children from birth to age five, no matter their family’s income.

After launching in 1995, the program grew quickly. First books were only distributed to children living in Sevier County, Tennessee where Dolly grew up. It became such a success that in 2000 a national replication effort was underway. By 2003, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library had mailed one million books. It would prove to be the first of many millions of books sent to children around the world.
